The deadly danger of electronic cigarettes is proved

Scientists at the University of Minnesota in the United States found that the vapor from electronic cigarettes can cause DNA damage in the cells of the mouth and cause the development of malignant tumors. The results of the scientific work are presented at the conference of the American Chemical Society. This is reported in a press release on EurekAlert !.

Many studies confirm that it is safer than the smoking of conventional cigarettes, in which carcinogenic products of tobacco combustion are formed. However, there are contradictory data on the risk that the use of electronic cigarettes carries.

The researchers evaluated the effect of steam on electronic cigarettes on five volunteers. Before and after the 15-minute waking session, the participants in the experiment took saliva samples and analyzed them for the presence of chemicals that destroy DNA. In addition, the subjects evaluated the degree of damage to the genetic apparatus in cells.

Scientists have identified three toxic compounds, the concentration of which in the saliva after puffs has increased significantly: formaldehyde, acrolein and methylglyoxal. In addition, four out of five subjects had DNA damage associated with exposure to acrolein.

The substance caused the appearance of DNA adducts – complexes of nucleic acids and foreign molecules, in which the correct course of transcription and translation processes is impossible. If the cell can not repair the lesions, then there may be errors in DNA replication, leading to the appearance of malignant tumors.
